Cuba, 2008.
Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and his guerrilleros overthrew Batista regime and Fidel has ruled for nearly 50 years on the island. In Cuba, it is difficult to separate: between dictatorship and social progress… On one hand, Fidel tortured, imprisoned thousands, if not Hundreds of thousands of people, on the other hand he brought education and health-care for everyone. It was rare when people asked me where I came from, that they didn’t knew where Belgium was.
The embargo led by the United States and Europe arranges in many ways Fidel Castro since he took the opportunity to lead severely and keep the country closed. On the other hand, if the country was now open very quickly, the Cuban mafia of Florida and the Americans would fall on the country, presumably leaving the people back into a certain misery.
Cuba’s land is rich: the culture of tobacco, fruits and sugar cane covers the island. At the same time, for example, they import olive oil from Spain, which makes it expensive and restricted to tourists…
Havana is a beautiful city, striking with his old colonial buildings in various states of decrepitude, where people who, despite their difficulties (« la lucha » -the struggle- to find money or food is permanent), keep smiling while shaking their head in a « No es facil » (it’s not easy).
In any case, Cuba can not be told in few words…
