40e Rencontres Photos d’Arles

July 24th, 2009

img_9883.jpg

It been a long time I didn’t post, sorry for the followers! So, I went to Arles for the 40th Rencontres Photographiques, and it was great! I never saw so much photogs in the same place… it was funny, everybody looking one another DSLRs, I think I was seen as a worth-one with the 5DMkII… Only the Leicas were looking everyone with some sort of disdain, hmm okay, just a joke!
I enjoyed very much the conference of Martin Parr, a very simple and well humoured man with great talent. I loved the Duane Michals exhibit and also Eugene Richard new work in color, well and so many others (don’t have the list with me).
I had the chance to meet some cool guys and been introduced to the “underground” festival, or maybe we can call it the off-off-festival: Eric and Cyrille (les Tordeurs de Cuillères – culinar events) and all their kind friends, so it happened that I participae in a collective exhibit during the “Nuit de la Roquette” on 9th of July.  Wow.

Here is a small selection of the festival. I’ll upload more when I get back home.

I’m currently in the Gorges du Verdon, the biggest canyon in Europe. While waiting for a friend to go free climbing on these fantastic cliffs, I’m shooting landscapes of course, and also on location pics for a music CD for friends. I’ll try to post some pics very soon.

***EDIT 21/08***
The “small” selection grew, it’s now 177 pics from Arles you’ll have (for the same price) !
When I came back to Brussels, I went to see what was the problem with my iMac, doctor said it was the MB, as it was just a bit more expensive to get one of these new MacBookPro 13″, –which I dreamed of during the summer while trying to sort my (heavy RAW) pics on an old PC–, so here it is, I’ve now got one! Now just a bit more patience, as I sort the rest of my (too) numerous pics from the Verdon, cuban concert in Bayamo Festival, also some during a rehearsal of Aconchamarina, my godmother little band… Thanks!

Strelli shooting – Man silhouettes

June 24th, 2009

As you’ve heard, I’ve been shooting for Olivier Strelli. Wow, wait this is not big fashion shooting! It’s was just an inside job for internal use. Well, it maybe will be displayed in a pro fashion magazine. Maybe.
Here are 2 pics I took with my mobile phone (not an iPhone, not yet) of the set I’ve put up for the shooting. I know, really not professional, but it worked quite fine, apart for the white balance, which I set up fine, but didn’t count on natural light changing hour to hour without you noticing it. I’ll have to check that well for the next shooting on 2nd of July, for woman silhouettes. I’ll try to borrow some reflectors, or maybe a second strobe… Cross my fingers!

Fête de l’Environnement – Eurovote

June 8th, 2009

Long time no post! Sorry for that…
Here are some pics from the Environemental little festival on this Sunday 7 of June at the Cinquantenaire Park, I missed the Sinsemilla concert that evening because I was trying to get in the European site, but with no accreditation it was useless (and trying to get one so late useless too), so I sticked outside, chatting with tech-crews and people, snap-shooting, but nothing really interesting happened… You can have a look at the Demotix page.

Fête de l’Iris 2009

May 13th, 2009

The annual festival of the city, the “Fête de l’Iris” ran last week-end and fortunately the sun also came! There are animations everywhere between Place Royale and Grand Place… It seemed to me it was more colored this year, or maybe just an illusion?
I couldn’t stay very long but here are some images…

f/5, 1/1000s, at 75mm, 100 ISO, on a Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Costumed guys on stilts were circling around...

And well, there was a good ambiance at the Mont des Arts, just below the Place Royale, so I mainly stayed there…
I also stayed a while with the skaters, and I was happy to have a strobe and a 20mm 2,8 with me, which permitted to stay close to the action!

Tcha Limberger

Tcha Limberger was born into a family of musicians. His grandfather was violinist and his father a guitarist. He started playing in his father’s band “De Piottos’ first of course and later became the rhythm guitarist of Waso. When he was seventeen, he started to play violin, inspired by stories of his grandfather, and recordings from Hungarian Toki Horvat. He split with the Orchestra De Piotto’s, and made a trio with his father Vivi and his uncle Bisque Limberger. A year later, they started a band named “Romani” with Koen de Cauter and two of his sons Dajo, Viv. (excerpts from lejazzetal.com)

I was working years ago as a barman in a restaurant which had live music on fridays and saturdays night. I met there almost all the jazz musicians from Belgium and many other world music people, it was funny! So, all this to say it was then I came to know Tcha Limberger: he was playing with Waso, Koen De Cauter and children band. He’s blind, sometimes it take people a time to remark it. I remember one night, during the break, he asked me a straw and a pair of scissors, and he started to make a flute out of the straw! Just to say he’s a wonderful musician and a very nice man, and I was happy to catch him at a friend’s party!

Full Moon

Full moon on Brussels

Full moon on Brussels

Last night (Wednesday) was the full moon, so I streched out of my roof window and took this picture… The 70-200 f2,8 Philippe (Photo Ali rocks!) lent me is very handy and a great lens (even without the IS) by the way! So finally I can shoot the moon, have some precision and not only a burned spot!

Rouge Festival

April 2nd, 2009

Last Sunday (28/03/09), the Socialist party organised a meeting which was followed by an afternoon of concerts and animations just by the Place Flagey in Brussels. I’m really not in politics but I have to say they’re good to organize events! And with luck, the weather was sunny, which helped to gather people…

Elio Di Rupo, the Socialist party president, opened the meeting, and other political celebrities such as Nyrup Rasmussen, Martine Aubry, Jean-Claude Marcourt… (didn’t memorized them all) made short appearences between the performances.

I had the pleasure to see my former capoeira instructor, Bras, who was there with his Bloco Sampoeira, a mix of capoeira and samba music, with all the drums. I also came to know the Don Fiasko, a Balkans electro brass-band… Not sure they came for the Balkans, but their music definitely ! Both made people jump and laugh! I unfortunately couldn’t stay to see Marka and Laurence Bigot’s “Monsieur et Madame” performance… Next time!

So, if you want to see the pictures in larger size, just go on my homepage!

Demonstration for freedom in Tibet and against Chinese “Serf Emancipation Day”

March 29th, 2009

A demonstration for freedom in Tibet and against Chinese “Serf Emancipation Day” took place this afternoon in front of the Chinese ambassy in Brussels. About 100 Tibetans and Belgians gathered to protest.
Tibetans in exile denounce China’s newly-created public holiday on March 28th nammed “Serf Emancipation Day”, saying the event is aggravating problems in Tibet and it’s “offensive and provocative”.
